BRUNSWICK — Teens To Trails is pleased to announce that 18 Maine high school outing clubs will receive Grants-To-Clubs Program awards this year. Through these grants, Teens to Trails assures that Maine teens have more opportunities for life-changing outdoor experiences with their peers. Awards, ranging from financial grants to gear, will support outing clubs in offering students more trips to and/or access to outdoor equipment.
The Grants-To-Clubs Program is open to any high school outing club in Maine with current Teens to Trails registration. Grants are awarded up to $500 to cover transportation, outdoor gear, and/or safety and skills training for leaders. Other awards fulfill outdoor gear needs. This program is made possible through generous individual contributions, support from L.L. Bean, the Betterment Fund and donations of gently used equipment.
In Bangor the John Bapst Memorial High School Outing Club received a $500 grant to fund the purchase of nordic ski equipment for students. According to their grant application, the program tries “to go on multiple winter camping trips in a year and access to nordic ski equipment consistently is an issue.” This grant will allow greater access to the ski trips by making loaner skis available to students who do not have their own equipment.
Club adviser Benjamin Hale said the club intends to have the skis available for students to borrow in time for a March trip to the Katahdin Woods and Waters and will be used for future trips as well.
Eighteen outing clubs received assistance this year: Brunswick High School, Carrabec High School, Cheverus High School, Dirigo High School, Fryeburg Academy, Gardiner Area High School, John Bapst Memorial High School, Madison Area Memorial High School, Maine Academy of Natural Sciences, Messalonskee High School, Monmouth Academy, Mountain Valley High School, Mt. Ararat High School, The New School, Old Orchard Beach High School, Sacopee Valley High School, South Portland and Spruce Mountain High School
