Students from Searsport District and Lewiston high schools named Governor’s Young Writers of the Year

AUGUSTA, Maine — Three high school students have been chosen as the winners of the Maine Community College System’s A Journey Into Writing contest and named 2013 Governor’s Young Writers of the Year. They are Emily Evans of Searsport and Arianna Tang of Frankfort, both juniors at Searsport District High School, and Fadumo Musse, a junior at Lewiston High School.  A Journey Into Writing is open to all high school juniors and home-schooled students of the same age.

The three students each were presented with an award and a $2,500 check by first lady Ann LePage in a ceremony at the Blaine House on June 19. MCCS President John Fitzsimmons joined her in presenting the awards.

Evans won for her essay, “The Lake House;” Tang won for her essay, “Sunny Side Up,” and Musse won for her essay, “The Land of my Memories.” The judges for the ninth annual contest were Maine authors Susan Kenney, Lewis Robinson and Bill Roorbach.

The contest is supported by U.S. Cellular, which has provided $80,000 in prize money to contest finalists since the program was established in 2005.

The three winners were chosen from five finalists out of a total of 137 entries in this year’s contest, representing more than 40 Maine high schools.  The two other finalists were Noah Ransom of Limerick, a junior at Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone; and Emily Marquis of Waterboro, a junior at Massabesic High School. These two students each will receive a plaque and a check for $500.

To enter the contest, students submit a short story, essay, or poem of up to 1,500 words. More information about the contest, including this year’s top five entries, is available at
