Nature photographer Dan Zukowski will showcase conservation success stories at L.L. Bean in Freeport on Earth Day.

South Portland, Maine, March 10, 2016 – Maine-based wildlife and conservation photographer Dan Zukowski will be presenting “Earth Day: Progress To Be Proud Of” as part of the L.L. Bean Lecture Series at the Freeport, Maine campus on April 22, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free.

“The news about climate change, habitat loss and species extinction is often frightening and can seem overwhelming,” said Dan Zukowski. “Yet, the environmental movement has always been driven by individuals who took action and created change.”

From egrets almost driven to extinction by a fashion craze to bounty-hunting for wolves and mountain lions, Dan brings his photography and reporting skills to tell a story that is at once scary, heart-rending and uplifting. In an hour-long presentation, he will present these unfortunate episodes and the conservation success stories that followed. And in a year in which the National Park Service and Acadia National Park both celebrate their 100th anniversary, Dan will also discuss the history and efforts to preserve important habitats from Acadia to Yellowstone. Maine-related topics include the recovery of bald eagles and peregrine falcons from the overuse of DDT and the important contributions of Rachel Carson to this and other conservation issues.

“On the heels of the successful Paris climate talks, Earth Day 2016 is a time for celebration and a reminder that we all have work to do to maintain a healthy and vibrant planet,” said Zukowski.

Dan’s photography has been exhibited in Maine at “The heART of Photography” show sponsored by the Maine Professional Photographers Association and the “Art of Wellness” and “Oceania” exhibits at WEX Inc., along with galleries in Los Angeles and Europe. He is also a writer and speaker, with bylines in the San Francisco Chronicle, San Jose Mercury News, Newsday, Nature Photographer, Changing Times and Trains magazines. He is a regular contributor to Invironment.

Dan’s mission is to bring the natural beauty that he sees to others, so that they may enjoy the natural world and gain an appreciation of our place in a vibrant planet teeming with life. He is a member of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA) and the International Academy of Visual Arts (IAVA). Dan relocated to South Portland, Maine in 2015 from Los Angeles.
