SKOWHEGAN – The 2013 American Cancer Society Relay for Life for Somerset County will kick off Saturday, June 15 at the Skowhegan State Fairgrounds with 39 teams and 516 participants, according to registration chair Heidi York Lyman.
“We have raised approximately $68,000 so far and our goal is $124,000 this year,” Lyman said. “So we’re very optimistic. A lot of last-minute contributions come in as well as pledges for the teams. Everyone is really pumped up for the weekend.”
Relay for Life is a community event where teams take turns walking on the horse racing track at the fairgrounds continuously for 18 hours.
The public also invited to watch the events – you do not have to be a team member.
Securing Our Survival (SOS) is still the top fund-raising team going into the home stretch of the relay preparation, followed by Jane’s Shooting Stars and Team New Balance.
The rest of the top 10 participating teams are SPARC, Assistance-Plus Community Outreach, Skowhegan Savings, SVH Caring Crew, Rainbow Warriors, Heart Menders and Roy’s Fishing Buddies.
Several community fund raisers for Relay for Life have been held since the start of the year including yard sales, poker runs, a kid’s winter carnival, a “Zumba-Thon” at Margaret Chase Smith School in Skowhegan and a tournament at Loon’s Cove Golf Course in Skowhegan.
This year’s Relay for Life theme is “Holidays” and teams are encouraged to dress in appropriate attire of their choice – Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day, etc.
The American Cancer Society Relay or Life movement is also the world’s largest support group for survivors and their caregivers.
A cancer survivor is defined by the American Cancer Society as anyone who is living with cancer from the date of diagnosis. Caregivers are anyone who has or is still helping someone with cancer, including family and friends.
Both are honored in a parade lap at the beginning of the Somerset County Relay for Life at noon Saturday.
