SKOWHEGAN, Maine — Skowhegan’s Al’s Pizza has earned the People’s Choice Award at the 2013 Maine Whoopie Pie Festival in Dover Foxcroft. The festival, held June 22, attracted more than 20 of Maine’s finest whoopie pie bakers from Wells to Old Town. Bakeries and restaurants attending the festival handed out samples and sold products to thousands of festival goers.
Even with rain showers throughout the day, Al’s Pizza went through roughly 1,800 samples pieces and sold over 800 whoopie pies within 4 hours. “We felt terrible, but we completely ran out of whoopie pies before the event was over,” said co-owner Chad Partridge. “It was a lot of fun, a fantastic event!”
“Our Maine blueberry with cream cheese filling whoopie pie was a huge hit! We sold out of those first,” said co-owner Marsha Toth. “Everyone was coming to the booth saying, ‘we want to try the blueberry one, we heard it was great!’” In addition to the Maine blueberry whoopie pie, Al’s also brought their famous traditional and peanut butter whoopie pies.
“It was wonderful to see all the support for our whoopie pies! I couldn’t believe the number of people who told us we were their favorite and that they’d been waiting since last year’s festival to get some more”, said Toth. “Some people were buying them by the dozen to take home!”
Siblings, Marsha Toth and Chad Partridge, purchased Al’s Pizza in the fall of 2012 from their parents Barry and Adina Partridge, who retired after more than 40 years in the business.
“It was great to build on and continue the success our parents had at this event the past few years. They gave us a lot of help this year,” said Partridge. “We also have to acknowledge our entire staff and our families for all the hard work and help preparing for and working at this event. We are very much a family business!”
It was the third time in four years that Al’s has taken awards at the Festival. In addition to this year’s award, Al’s Pizza won the People’s Choice Award in 2010 as well as “Best Traditional Whoopie Pie” in 2011. Al’s whoopie pies, are available exclusively at Al’s Pizza in Skowhegan and Cappza’s Pizza in Waterville.
