Those interested in the ongoing debate about gun violence are invited to attend the second meeting of Silent No More, a northern Maine group of individuals who desire to see sensible and responsible steps taken to address the problem. The scope of the problem has been identified in a report released by The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies entitled Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence and can be found here: In it they note that the US firearm homicide rate is 19.5% higher than rates in other industrialized countries with handguns accounting for the vast majority of firearm-related homicides. Maine is above the national average in the export of gun crime. It is time to do something to reduce that statistic. Join us for a conversation about and the steps we need to take to require universal background checks for all firearm sales Thursday, July 18, 6:00, Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine, 96 Harlow Street.
