OLD TOWN, Maine — Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, and at the Old Town-Orono YMCA it’s free.
The group welcomes all ages and abilities, and at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays, Y member Al Dickey, 64, Old Town, will offer free lessons for an hour before the regular hourlong session starts at 11 a.m.
“It’s fairly new [at the Y] and we are looking for new people,” said Dickey, who started playing pickleball once a week at the Y when the program launched in early 2016.
“This is an active sport, but it’s not as much running [as tennis],” he said. “It’s a much smaller court.”
Pickleball is a mixture of ping-pong, badminton, and tennis, and is the perfect sport for athletes of all ages who want to stay active with minimal impact on the body.
“It’s a wonderful group of people who come in,” Dickey said. “There’s mostly active seniors, and I try to be an active senior.”
He noted that there’s lots of laughing and the group is open to all ages.
“It’s mainly about being able to try something and laugh about it if it doesn’t work out,” Dickey said. “It’s kind of an obscure sport.”
