BANGOR — RSU22 was strongly represented at the 2018 Maine Destination Imagination competition on March 24, held in Bangor. RSU 22 had six teams out of nearly 50 showing off their talents, creativity and leadership. Three teams were from Leroy H. Smith School in Winterport, one was from George B. Weatherbee School in Hampden, and two were from Wagner Middle School in Winterport.

RSU 22 district coordinator is Nicolle Philbrook.

The teams and placements were:
— Smith School Rising Stars, “Sir Shhh A Lot”.
— Smith School third-graders, “Say Cheese!,” first place in Unlikely Attraction category.
— Smith School fourth-graders and homeschooler, “Captured Creatures,” third place in Change of Tune.
— Weatherbee School fourth-graders, “Electric Cupcake Rainbow Fish,” fourth place in Unlikely Attraction.
— Wagner Middle School seventh-graders, “The iLLAMAnati Tribe,” first place in Unlikely Attraction, and Renaissance Award.
— Wagner Middle School eighth-graders “Culture Recovery,” first place in Improv.

The three teams that received first place — “Say Cheese!”, “The iLLAMAnati Tribe”, and “Culture Recovery” — have earned the right to compete in Destination Imagination’s Global Finals 2018, the world’s largest celebration of student creativity, courage and curiosity, to be held May 23-26, at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Thirteen of RSU 22’s students have the chance to interact with more than 8,000 other students from around the world during the four-day event. The scheduled festivities include the Destination Imagination Tournament, interactive exhibits, pin trading, skills workshops, international events and more.

This year, 150,000 students have participated in tournaments throughout the United States and in 30 countries in hopes of earning a spot at the Global Finals, according to Destination Imagination.

The RSU 22 teams are trying to raise the funds necessary for the teams to go to Global Finals. It costs approximately $1,000 per person. Organizers and the teams are planning yard sales, bake sales, bottle drives, family activities and raffles in the next few weeks. Donations can be sent to RSU 22 Destination Imagination, 19 Williams Way, Winterport, ME 04496.
