BELFAST — On Monday, Jan. 20, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, there will be a celebration of the grand opening of The Commons, located at 158 High St. in downtown Belfast. Rep. Jan Dodge will perform the ribbon-cutting ceremony just past noon, which will be followed by an open house with refreshments, information and social gathering until 2 p.m.

The mission of The Commons is to provide a shared meeting space and forum for climate, environmental and social justice work in our communities. Four organizations have come together collectively to open the downtown space: Local Citizens for SMART Growth, Belfast Area Community Rights, Midcoast Maine Extinction Rebellion and Friends of the Harriet L. Hartley Conservation Area. Other groups or individuals who align with the collective mission of the space are invited to explore how they might get involved.

In the words of Martin Luther King Jr., “The time is always right to do what is right.” These four groups celebrate the beginning of 2020 by creating The Commons as a community resource for all who are working cooperatively towards a better world.
