Help launch “A Rocket Made of Ice” at Jesup Memorial Library on Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 7:00 p.m. The book, by Bar Harbor’s own Gail Gutradt, has been chosen by Barnes and Noble as a Fall 2014 selection of the Discover Great New Writers Program.

This disarming, funny, deeply moving book shares the stories of children saved and changed by a very special place – the Wat Opot Children’s Community – and tells of one woman’s transformation in trying to help them.

Begun with just $50 from the pocket of a former U.S. Marine Corps medic, Wat Opot is a temple complex nestled among Cambodia’s verdant rice paddies. Once a haunted scrubland, it became a place of healing and respite where children with or orphaned by HIV/AIDS could live outside of fear or judgment and find a new family – a place that Ms. Gutradt calls “a workshop for souls.”

This special event is co-sponsored by Sherman’s book store, and copies of the book will be available for purchase at the Jesup that evening with a percentage of the sale price donated to the library.
