BANGOR — Penquis Lynx Mobility Services was named Rural Transportation System of the Year this week at the Community Transit Association of America annual conference in Pittsburgh. This national award recognizes a rural transit system that provides innovative and creative services and is responsive to its customers; and community’s needs.

Penquis Lynx Mobility Services made approximately 42,000 trips last year throughout Penobscot and Piscataquis counties covering 1,300,000 miles. Those miles included transportation for dialysis, cancer care, treatment for substance use disorders, day programs for individuals with disabilities, veterans’services and public transportation, off the bus route, that allows citizens to go a variety of places, including shopping and visits with family and friends.

The CTAA and its members believe that mobility is a basic human right. From work and education to life-sustaining health care and human services programs to shopping and visiting with family and friends, mobility directly impacts quality of life.

“The Lynx team’s innovative approach, hard work and determination to provide access to reliable transportation throughout our service area demonstrate the values of the Community Transportation Association of America,” stated Kara Hay, CEO, Penquis. “We are honored to receive this award and will continue to find creative ways to increase access to reliable transportation for Maine residents.”

Marcia Larkin, Director, Lynx Mobility Services, is committed to providing access to transportation. “There is a significant need for transportation services, especially in our rural areas and for our aging population. Lynx Mobility Services uses diverse funding streams to provide a wide range of critical transportation services, and we won’t stop until the needs for transportation are met,” stated Larkin.
