Early this spring the Penquis Journey House was nominated to participate in the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation’s annual grant-making initiative, Community Matters More. Through this initiative, people from all over the state had the opportunity to vote on how to best allocate $100,000 the bank had pledged to give to 68 nonprofit Maine organizations.

More than 80,000 votes were cast by the people of Maine. The Penquis Journey House in Dexter was selected to receive $1,000 as a result of community members’ votes. The Penquis Journey House is a transitional living program for pregnant and/or parenting young women between the ages of 16 and 21 who are experiencing homelessness. The program offers 24 hour on site staff for support and guidance, case management services, connection to area resources and parenting support.

On behalf of the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation, Barbara Whitney, Branch Manager for Bangor Savings Bank in Dexter, presented the check to Maddy Currier, House Parent, and Denise Trafton, Residential Services Director, who accepted the donation for the Penquis Journey House.
