Paintings and other art by the residents of the Marshwood Center in Lewiston will be on display for First Friday Art Walk this Friday, June 7, from 5-8 p.m. at the Oak Street Lofts gallery. Entitled “Late Works,” the show features still-life, blotch and stamp paintings, as well as colorized antique photography and drawings, created by residents as part of the Center’s artist-in-residence program. The show is curated by artist Michelle Michaud.

In April, the Marshwood Center began an art program led by Jeannine Davin, a housekeeper at the Center and a lifelong painter. Her weekly Painting 101 classes have become a big success at the Center, a 108-bed skilled nursing facility that provides long-term and rehabilitative care.

“The residents really enjoy it,” said Angela Mastrella of the Marshwood Center. “A lot of residents who used to paint have had a renewed interest in it.”

Friday’s gallery show is the result of a collaboration between Oak Street Lofts resident Michelle Michaud and the Marshwood Center. Michelle was visiting her grandmother at the Marshwood Center and saw the residents’ art on display. She approached the Center about a gallery showing at Oak Street Lofts.

Michelle, a potter, said the program provides people who may have been artists years ago “the opportunity to create once again, and that’s a special moment.”

Completed in January 2012 and located in the heart of the city’s arts district, Oak Street Lofts is a unique property that caters to artists looking to work and live affordably in Portland. Besides the gallery, Oak Street Lofts features a shared work space for residents, and the property’s 37 efficiency apartments include ample storage for art supplies and equipment. The gallery, located at 72 Oak St., is open to the public every First Friday Art Walk.

Oak Street Lofts is also the first affordable multi-family building in Maine to achieve LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. For more on Oak Street Lofts and its energy-efficient features, visit our website at
