Northern Tides Art and Gift Gallery of Lubec, Maine announced today three artisans who have been awarded the Gift Gallery’s 2012 Appreciation Award. The award winners were selected from the 150 local, Maine, Canadian Maritime, and New England artists and artisans who are represented by Northern Tides, Inc.

Northern Tides Art and Gift Gallery staff reviewed hundreds of comments from customers, both hand-written in-store and electronic from Facebook, direct emails, and Skype conversations. We also considered overall annual sales per artisan. Finally, it was uniformly agreed to award one local, one Maine, and one New England artisan with a Certificate of Appreciation for 2012.

Lubec/Local Artisan Appreciation:

Andrea Poulos, a local nurse and developer of natural seaweed-based skin care products, utilizes local seaweed that is harvested in Lubec, Maine. Andrea offers body washes, body lotions, sea salt and sugar scrubs, and body-seaweed chamois. For professionals in the health care realm, the use of seaweed in skin care products will come as no surprise. Seaweed products are the foundation of wound care in health care, used to treat wounds such as: burns, bedsores, rashes, or extreme dryness that causes the skin to flake and become infected. Andrea Poulos’ product was introduced in 2011 and took our market by storm.

Andrea’s commitment to business excellence comes through in her product integrity and design, her ethical concern for health and beauty through organic and natural product development, and her commitment to superior customer service.

Maine Artisan Appreciation:

Erda, Inc. located in Cambridge, Maine, ranked the best of the State of Maine products. The “Erda Ladies” select vibrant, sturdy textiles and the softest deerskin to produce their unique handbags. Their bags sport sculptured shapes, beads, stones, and fringes, sizes ranging from small wrist bags to weekend bags, Ipad carriers, and picnic bags.

Northern Tides appreciates Erda Inc’s creative artistic vision, their willingness to listen to ideas, create new products and work with our Northern Tides’ customer family. Erda offers rare customer service in these days of mass-produced imported goods. They stand behind every bag they produce. They gladly accept repair work, which is completed efficiently and quickly. All Erda bags come with a tag indicating the woman who cut out the bag and the woman who sewed it. Northern Tides staffers and customers alike send grand kudos to Erda, Inc. for their commitment to their product and to those who represent them.

New England Appreciation Award:

Solmate Socks, Inc. proved a welcome newcomer to Northern Tides Art and Gift Gallery in 2012. Unable to find a product similar in variety and volume closer to home, Northern Tides’ staff risked branching out to our neighbors in Vermont and introduced Solmate Socks to our customer base in 2012 – and it was a grand success.

Solmate Socks’ colorful and complex patterns are knit in the USA at a family owned knitting mill using recycled cotton, hand finished, and “mismatched with care.” Just like the other Award Winners, they excel at customer service and marketing, offer creative designs and patterns, have a superior return policy, and are a delight to work with.

Northern Tides’ staff wishes to thank these three industrious, committed, small and micro businesses, as well as our many other devoted artists and artisans, for making our 2012 a great success. We look forward to working with you all in 2013.

Finally, we wish to thank all of our devoted customers and friends, near and far. Northern Tides could not have continued to grow without our Northern Tides family nor without your open, honest evaluation of our artists’ and artisans’ products and your continued encouragement. Thank you.
