FORT KENTRobin Damboise, Northern Maine Medical Center’s (NMMC) Director of Human Resources, announced the nomination for the fourth quarter of 2017 for NMMC’s Employee of the Quarter honoree. Candidates who are nominated for the Employee of the Quarter award must meet rigorous performance requirements to be considered by the selection committee.

Carole Richards, RN, was selected by her peers for the award based on her extraordinary efforts to accommodate the individual needs of patients and for her excellent nursing skills. The nomination described Richards as professional, positive, efficient, top-notch, respectful and truly caring for her patients in her daily advocacy of ensuring her patients will have the resources they need to manage their health.

Richards earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK) in 2014. Prior to her move into healthcare, Richards taught science and math at the community college in Edmundston.

She said, “I thought of pursuing a teaching degree in the United States but I wanted to reinvent myself. I had an interest in healthcare related matters and with my background in science, I decided to pursue nursing.”

In 2014, she began her nursing career at NMMC after graduation from UMFK. She accepted a position in psychiatry and long-term care and in 2015, she transferred to a position as office nurse in Internal Medicine. Richards indicated she had been looking to expand her knowledge in health care when she made the change.

With passion in her voice, Richards said with a smile, “I tell everyone that I love my job. This nomination is such an honor; it is a testament to our team in the Medical Practices. I could not be successful in my job without the constant help and support of the Medical Assistants, receptionists, providers and supervisors.”

She also said that she gets the most satisfaction in her role when she is able to advocate for patients when they need assistance to overcome the financial challenges of obtaining medications they cannot otherwise afford.

Richards resides in Madawaska with her husband, Scott, and their two children, Julia and Sam. Richards and the entire family are very active in their community, volunteering in community events, hospital sponsored events and strong supporters of the Four Seasons Trail Association. The honoree will receive a monetary gift from NMMC and the Medical Staff for her performance excellence and her photo will be displayed on a plaque in a public place of recognition.
