FORT KENT — Terri Harrington, director of Patient Financial Services at Northern Maine Medical Center (NMMC), announced that Crystal Condo, Patient Financial Advocate, successfully completed the baccalaureate level academic requirements and certification exam to become a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).

Harrington said, “We take great pride in each employee’s accomplishments and we are very proud of Crystal for her achievement which she accomplished while balancing personal and work life.”

Harrington also said that the additional knowledge gained by Condo will further assist patients to navigate very complex health benefits systems and offer additional support to them through what can be a stressful experience.

Condo initially accepted a position as a receptionist in the Internal Medicine office at the Acadia Family Health Center in Madawaska in August of 2017. She later moved to the position of Patient Financial Advocate at NMMC. As an RHIA, she has acquired knowledge in five core areas: data content, structure and standards of information governance; information protection related to access, disclosure, archival, privacy, and security; informatics, analytics and data use; and revenue management and leadership.

Having worked in healthcare as a Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) and having dealt with health issues of her own in the past, she believed she could help others. Condo said, “Since I had all of this medical knowledge from my own health issues and having worked as a C.N.A., the medical field seemed like a great choice.”

She began work on her degree in 2014, initially at Northern Maine Community College where she graduated as student of the year. She then continued on to earn a baccalaureate degree at Charter Oak State College in Connecticut, where she graduated with honors.

Condo was born in Lowell, Massachusetts and currently resides in Madawaska with her husband, and two children, ages seven and fifteen. In her leisure time, she enjoys outdoor activities and movie nights with her family.
