PRESQUE ISLE — MMG Insurance has been named as the recipient of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) 2019 Overall Award in Innovation. The presentation was made June 26 at an awards ceremony held in conjunction with the NAMIC Management Conference in Asheville, North Carolina.

This national award was created by NAMIC to recognize mutual insurers that exemplify the vision and entrepreneurialism it takes to stay relevant in changing times. MMG was selected based upon its innovative approach to talent attraction, development and retention. Specific areas noted within the award presentation included the Company’s high impact intern program, creative communication and outreach efforts to establish a new narrative around the rewarding opportunities available in the insurance industry, and initiatives to advance employee development and make the work environment more dynamic. NAMIC also cited the results achieved which have included the conversion of interns to full time employees, 150 hires over the past five years, and an increase of millennials in our workforce from 21% in 2013 to nearly 38%.

“Facing the looming talent shortage industry-wide, we realized the need for a new and innovative approach to career design and evolution,” said Larry Shaw, president and CEO of MMG. “It’s a multi-pronged approach that creates a strategic and successful talent pipeline in which employees are empowered by aspiration and the narrative around the insurance industry has been transformed.”

“This strategy has enabled our company to achieve a significant shift in demographics, increasing our millennial percentage in particular,” said Matthew McHatten, MMG’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. “As we develop new and existing talent and support emerging leaders, the positive impacts are felt across the workplace, from increased collaboration to more mindful approaches to work-life balance and refocused attention on career growth and movement. We’re confident we’ve designed an approach that reinforces the value of our industry.”

In presenting the award to Shaw, Chuck Chamness, NAMIC’s president and CEO, said, “Throughout the United States, businesses are scrambling to fill jobs left behind by retiring baby boomers. This talent shortage has moved the property/casualty insurance industry to the forefront of creating new and innovative ways to attract young people to the industry, all the while developing leadership skills within current employees to prepare them for the future. The creative and effective strategy employed by MMG to build its employee and leadership base is a great example for the insurance industry and the business sector as a whole.”

This Award in Innovation reflects engagement and collaboration among the entire workforce at MMG. The employees’ shared commitment to the company’s values and vision continue to position us for a bright future in which growth and perpetuation accompany continued success.
