The Jay Ungar and Molly Mason Family Band will perform at the Strand Theatre, 345 Main Street, on Saturday, November 12 at 7:30pm. Jay and Molly, one of America’s most celebrated acoustic music duos, will be joined by Jay’s daughter Ruth Ungar, and her husband Mike Merenda.

Jay Ungar and Molly Mason perform hard driving Appalachian, Cajun, and celtic fiddle tunes, country songs and ballads, waltzes, and their own original tunes. They are well known for the music they wrote for Ken Burns’ PBS documentary The Civil War. Their performance of the series’ signature tune, Jay’s haunting composition “Ashokan Farewell,” earned the couple international acclaim. The soundtrack won a Grammy and “Ashokan Farewell” was nominated for an Emmy.

Jay and Molly are known as masters of music and storytelling. Jay’s technically excellent fiddling is playful, dramatic, and soulful; Molly’s mastery and inventiveness on piano and guitar, and her rich and expressive vocals, perfectly compliment their tunes.

Mike + Ruthy, originally from The Mammals, met in New York City and a musical and romantic relationship sprouted quickly. Mike Merenda favored rock and ska before being drawn into the world of acoustic music and brings those sensibilities to his playing on old-time banjo, guitar, percussion and compelling vocals. Ruthy grew up on traditional music, and brings fiddle, ukulele, guitar and deeply moving vocal performances to the Family Band.
