Northport photographer Herman Meisner will also be at Belfast’s Arts in the Park on July 13 and 14. The photographs that he has taken are also on on his Ducktrap Photography website . “My travels have taken me to many countries, but my primary interest is the Eastern coast. I use B&W film, Mamiya 645 or 7 cameras, and print with Epson inkjet onto Hahnemuhle fine art paper. I have photographed in many different locations- in Massachusetts; the Penobscot Bay area of Maine where water and fog dominate; Iceland, a country that has wonderful lighting conditions as a result of the Northern latitude and daily combination of wind, rain, and sun; Sicily; and in Yellowstone National Park.”

He also prints, from negatives, onto surfaces other than paper! This is done by coating the surface (shells, glass, stones) with a liquid emulsion, and then exposing these surfaces to the film image. You can read more details about this technique in his blog articles.

His formal training is in biochemistry, as a University research professor…”but I believe that photography has similarities to my long-time profession, in that, much like the outcome of research, a successful photograph is achieved in only a small fraction of cases.”

He studied photography at Maine Media Workshops; Cape Cod Workshops; also for many years at the Worcester Center for Crafts in Massachusetts, with Peter Faulkner, who he credits with teaching by example what good and not-so-good photographs look like. His works have been exhibited locally at single person and juried shows; currently represented by Maine Gathering in Camden, and Northport Landing in Northport, Maine.

Meisner will be at Arts in the Park in Belfast on July 13 and 14.
