SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Welcome to the Kit Kat Club, a seedy slice of late 1920s Berlin nightlife. Here, nightclub singer Sally Bowles struggles between her feelings for a young writer, Cliff Bradshaw, and her desire to be free of all care and encumbrance. Idealistic and in love with the mercurial Sally, Cliff finds his ideals and illusions being stripped away, one by one, in a world moving steadily closer to the horror of the Nazi’s rise to power.

Mad Horse Theatre Company, in association with Razer Entertainment, will presents “Cabaret” at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23, and 2 p.m. Aug. 17 and 24, at the Mad Horse Theater, 24 Mosher St. The production is directed and choreographed by Ray Dumont. Since “Cabaret” premiered on Broadway in 1966, with music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, and a book by Joe Masteroff,  it has enjoyed three very successful revivals and an Academy Award-winning film adaptation.

This production, according to Dumont, is “an entirely different approach to “Cabaret,” with audience seating on two sides of the playing area. The entire company has treated this production as a workshop, in which experimentation is encouraged, in order to create a more exciting and provocative work.

The subject matter is recommended for mature audiences.” Cost is $20, with a $2 discount available for students and seniors. For information and tickets, visit or call 747-4148.
