Kneading Conference and Artisan Bread Fair in Skowhegan
Focusing on locally grown grain

WHAT: The Maine Grain Alliance will host two events, the Kneading Conference on July 25&26, and the Maine Artisan Bread Fair on July 27, 9:00-3:00, both at the Skowhegan State Fairgrounds. The Conference will draw 250 presenters, participants and volunteers from around the country to learn about growing grain, baking, and building wood fired ovens. The Bread Fair is expected to draw 3,000+ visitors on the final day of festivities to taste and buy bread enjoy live music, and see demonstrations.

Richard Miscovich, master wood-fired baker and author of a soon-to-be released book on baking.

Events will also include tours at the new Somerset Grist Mill in downtown Skowhegan on Wednesday 5:00pm, Friday 4:15pm and Saturday 8:00am. Bakers using Maine-grown grains can be found at the Skowhegan Farmer’s Market on Saturday 9-1, and at The Bankery, a bakery in downtown Skowhegan, Saturday 7:30-6:00. Media, and local officials are invited to attend the Kneading Conference, Bread Fair, Gristmill tours and Farmer’s Market for coverage.

DETAILS: The annual Kneading Conference brings together farmers, professional and home bakers, chefs, cooks, grain researchers, maltsters, food entrepreneurs, millers
and wood-fired oven enthusiasts to educate one another about the art and science of growing and milling grains and baking artisan breads. The annual Artisan Bread Fair is a free summer festival offering wood-fired oven demonstrations, artisan bread samplings, and opportunities to talk with professional bakers and explore the best books, tools, and delicious accoutrements to whole grain and conventional bread baking. All day Bread Fair parking is $2.
