OLD TOWN — Hirundo Wildlife Refuge has announced its Kids in Nature program for youth ages 9-12 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays beginning July 14. Each week, Hirundo staff will provide guided adventures that are educational and fun. The cost is $12 per child. Parents are welcome to stay and enjoy Hirundo.
According to studies done by the National Wildlife Federation, children are spending less time outdoors and it has had a huge impact on the wellness of our nation’s youth. Not only does spending time in nature benefit the fitness and activity levels gaining healthy bodies, environment-based education has shown to significantly increase student performance on tests with critical thinking including math, reading, writing and listening.
Additionally, studies have shown that children’s stress levels fall within minutes of seeing green spaces, lessening anxiety and depression.
