The Affordable Care Act opened the door to health insurance coverage for thousands of Mainers. However, for many, trying to understand how to use this new coverage is not an easy task. Mallory Shaughnessy from Maine Community Health Options in partnership with the Knox County Community Health Coalition and Healthy Lincoln County (Healthy Maine Partnership) will facilitate Health Insurance 101: Community Forums at Spectrum Generations Knox Community Center in Rockland and its Coastal Community Center in Damariscotta. These forums are designed to help individuals and families understand how health insurance works, the terms used, and how to maximize one’s health benefits.
For many people insurance terms like premium, deductible, and co-pay are confusing. Yet these very terms are important in making the choice for health insurance coverage that is best for you (and your family). When most people hear the term co-pay they think about the amount of money they pay at the pharmacy for their medication; They don’t understand that they might also have a co-pay when they go see a doctor or are admitted to the hospital, depending on what insurance plan they have chosen.
Thanks to the increase in questions from consumers of health insurance products, materials and education sessions have been developed to help people better understand insurance and to make sense of the different plans offered. Spectrum Generations would like to help you gain the Health Insurance Literacy that everyone needs to make informed decisions. Knowing the facts could save you a lot of money. To this end Spectrum Generations Coastal and Knox Community Centers have scheduled the following free Healthcare 101 community forums, educational sessions and discussions.
August 22, 10:00 a.m. at Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center, 521 Main Street, Damariscotta, Maine. To register call 563-1363.
August 22, 2:00 p.m. at Spectrum Generations Knox Community Center, 61 Park Street, Rockland, Maine. To register call 596-0339.
Although these are free workshops. Donations in support of Spectrum Generations Community Centers community based programs are always appreciated.
