BANGOR, Maine – For the third consecutive year, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Hannaford Supermarkets will make it easy for its customers in Maine to help individuals with breast cancer or breast health related needs.

Throughout October, Hannaford customers may donate $2 or $5 at the register of their local store to support the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition’s Support Service Fund (www.mainebreastcancer.org/support/support.cfm). The donation program will be available at all Maine Hannaford stores.

The Maine Breast Cancer Coalition (www.mainebreastcancer.org) is a volunteer-based non-profit organization. Its Support Service Fund provides financial assistance for breast cancer and breast health related needs, including temporary living expense support for people in breast cancer treatment. Each year, the Support Service Fund helps hundreds of low-income, uninsured, and underinsured Maine residents, especially those newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

Earlier this year, Hannaford Supermarkets made a generous donation to the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition of $2,500 worth of food cards, which were awarded to Support Service Fund applicants who needed support for living expenses and nutrition while in breast cancer treatment.

It is estimated that 1,150 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in Maine. A breast cancer diagnosis is a life-altering event. When this diagnosis is accompanied by financial difficulties, patients and their families can face a crisis. Maine Breast Cancer Coalition is grateful to Hannaford Supermarkets for their support. The donations made at local Hannaford stores this October will make a big difference in the lives of Maine residents in need.
