BIDDEFORD– St. André Health Care has announced that it is on its way towards meeting the donation goal for its new memory care garden, which is scheduled for completion next spring. The organization has received financial support from Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution and P&C Insurance, which donated a combined $2,250 towards the garden’s construction.

The new, 5,600-square-foot memory care garden broke ground in September 2018 in Biddeford and will provide a safe space for patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia to spend peaceful time outside. It will feature a wide path for wheelchair-bound residents, elevated garden beds and a gazebo. There will also be space for physical exercise and other activities that boost memory function and improve quality of life.

“In the planning of the St. André Memory Care Garden, we focused on the development of a basic infrastructure, always with an eye on what would best serve the healing and care of our residents,” said Stephen Alaimo, president and administrator for St. André Health Care.

St. André is currently in the second phase of its funding cycle out of three. In the first phase, the organization raised $75,000. That money helped pay for the basic infrastructure of the garden, including initial paving and the installation of a gazebo. Phase two should be completed by the first week of September, Alaimo said, and will pay for landscaping, handicap doors and furniture.

In phase three, St. André is hoping to raise funds for other garden features, including enhancements for the gazebo like installing screens or windows. An outdoor kitchen is also being considered, which would be helpful in the planning and implementation of regular barbeques and other events. There are also plans to install new fencing. St. André is hoping to raise an additional $20,000 by the end of phase three.

“We are most grateful for all the donors for helping us to achieve our goals and surpassing them,” Alaimo said.
