Beginning on Saturday, June 29 the Owls Head Transportation Museum will offer daily educational activities and workshops for children. Children’s activities will alternate daily, and two sessions will be offered each day. These workshops are offered free of charge and materials are provided by the Museum.
The summer education schedule kicks off with hot air balloon building workshops on Saturday, July 29 and Sunday, July 30. A 10:00 am and 1:00 pm session will be offered each day. With the guidance of Museum education staff and volunteers, families will have the opportunity to construct their own hot air balloons from colorful tissue paper and demonstrate their creations by launching them inside the Museum using a heat gun. The anticipated time for completion of the hot air balloon workshop is 90 minutes.
Subsequent educational workshops are all offered in two daily sessions, at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm, on every regular museum day. An array of special activities and workshops will be offered throughout each day during our two-day special events. The daily workshop offerings are as follows:
Kites for Kids, Monday, July 1 and Monday, July 15 at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. Participants will build traditional kites and have an opportunity to uniquely decorate their creations before flying them. Completion of this workshop takes approximately 90 minutes.
Water Rockets, Tuesday, July 2, Saturday, July 13 and Monday, July 29 at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. Building water rockets is a great summertime activity! Participants are tasked with building a water- and air-powered rocket to launch at the Museum and at home. Completion of this workshop takes approximately 60 minutes.
Rubber Powered Planes, Monday, July 8 at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. Participants have an opportunity to build a self-powered airplane using wood and tissue paper. Completion of this workshop takes approximately 90 minutes.
Mousetrap Cars, Tuesday, July 9 and Tuesday, July 30 at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm.. Participants will build a fun mini race car using a mousetrap as a power source and then race their cars inside the Museum. Completion of this workshop takes approximately 90 minutes.
Putt-Putt Boats, Sunday, July 14 at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. Participants will build their very own steam powered boats and launch their vessels in a wading pool at the Museum. Completion of this workshop takes approximately 60 minutes.
Downhill Racers, Monday, July 22 at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. This workshop is a great introduction to motion! Participants will have an opportunity to build their own gravity-powered cars. Completion of this workshop takes approximately 60 minutes.
Customize Your Bike, Sunday, July 28 at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. After exploring the Museum’s extensive collection of historic bicycles and tricycles, participants will have time to decorate their own bikes as they wish. Bring your bike or trike and embrace summer style!
Kites for Adults, Tuesday, July 16 at 10:00 am. A hybrid of art workshop and kite building seminars, this class will include construction and painting instruction. Registration is required and participants will be charged a $10 materials fee.
A variety of children’s activities will be running during event days Saturday and Sunday, July 6 and 7, and Saturday and Sunday, July 20 and 21.

As always, children under 18 are admitted to the Owls Head Transportation Museum free of charge. Standard adult admission is $10 and senior admission is $8. The Owls Head Transportation Museum is open from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm every day, year round. The Museum is located at 117 Museum Street in Owls Head.
