Flag Day honors the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as our national flag by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. This is the 14th year that Greater Portland Landmarks has helped Portland celebrate Flag Day with ceremonies and activities at the Portland Observatory.

Greater Portland Landmarks manages the Portland Observatory, the last remaining maritime signal tower in the United States. Built in 1807 by Capt. Lemuel Moody, the 86-foot-tall tower, with its panoramic views, enabled Capt. Moody to alert merchants and ship owners that a ship was soon to arrive. The city of Portland has owned the Observatory since 1937. It is open daily Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day.

Founded in 1964, the mission of Greater Portland Landmarks is to preserve and revitalize the architectural fabric, history, and character of Greater Portland—renewing our neighborhoods, spurring economic development, and keeping Portland one of the most livable cities in America.

Volunteers will be stationed on each floor to answer visitors’ questions.

There will be children’s activities and scavenger hunts throughout the day, and hourly tours of Eastern Cemetery on Congress Street will be presented by Spirits Alive!
