December 12 will be the last day that the Finnish Heritage House in South Thomaston will be open in 2009. The FHH is open Sat. from 9-12. They offer baked goods and the delicious Finnish coffee bread. There is also a gift shop that features a variety of items, including CDs of Finnish music. The new cookbook ” From A Finnish Kitchen” is available. It features recipes from more than 100 local cooks and would make a great holiday present.

One of the highlights of this fall was Sept. 19 when The Heritage House invited members of The Finnish Congregational Church and the Finn Am Society of Mid-Coast Maine to join them in a day of Finnish Fun. There was a lunch of Finnish foods, live music, a  chance to make a Finnish paper star, a trivia game and the viewing of the 2009 displays. The best part of the day was a chance to see old friends and to make new ones.

The Heritage house will open again in April of 2010.

The web site is finnheritage.org  where  you can read about the organization’s activities and can order books that are offered in the gift shop. A book that is an interesting read at this time of year is ” Finnish Christmas Traditions”.
