SEARSPORT  — Two critical surgeries in the first two months of Callan Walker’s life left his parents, Kelsey and Michael, eager to give back to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital. Last week, Callan celebrated his first birthday and his family marked the occasion in a unique way. Instead of asking for presents, the Walker’s asked friends and family to donate, in Callan’s honor, to the children’s hospital to support lifesaving medical care for all children in Maine.

Walker’s health condition went unnoticed until the day before he was due. An ultrasound revealed an abnormality, called malrotation in his intestine. Left untreated, malrotation can become a very serious, life-threatening condition. Walker underwent his first surgery at only one day old and unexpectedly found himself back at The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital for a second surgery weeks later.

“Today, Callan is a happy, healthy one-year old little boy who loves music, books, boats and animals,” said Kelsey Walker. “We’re so grateful that The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital was here for us when we needed them most.”

To date, Walker has raised $525 using the My Miracle Birthday website platform to collect donations. The website allows the birthday donor to personalize their fundraising page and share with friends and family via email or social media.

Every dollar that Walker raised in support of the children being treated at BBCH will be doubled, thanks to matching gift commitments from Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution and P&C Insurance.

“Every dollar makes a difference, and we are happy to partner with BBCH and others to assist in making these wishes come true,” said Bob Quentin, president and CEO of Saco & Biddeford Savings. “We hope our support encourages others to join in.”

Donations to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital through the My Miracle Birthday program enhance the care provided at Maine’s only children’s hospital through the purchase of pediatric medical equipment and by providing financial support for specialized programs, like Child Life.
