BANGOR — The Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine will sponsor a public lecture and book signing by David Swanson. His talk, “Forming a More Perfect Union: Rights We’ve Lost and Rights We’ve Never Had,” will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at 170 Park St.
Swanson is the author of the new best-selling book, “Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union,” published by Seven Stories Press. He is co-founder of www.AfterDowningStreet.org, creator of www.ProsecuteBushCheney.org, Washington director of www.Democrats.com, a board member of Progressive Democrats of America, and a regular columnist for The Black Commentator.
According to Bruce Fein, associate deputy attorney general under President Ronald Reagan, “David Swanson’s masterful exposure of the emergence of a monarch like president coupled with an effete, irresponsible and constitutionally ignorant Congress is well worth the price of admission. An aroused public with a litmus test of honoring the Constitution is urgently needed to prevent the Republic from capsizing.”
Swanson’s Web site AfterDowningStreet was named a Most Valuable Progressive by The Nation magazine’s John Nichols in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Swanson serves as a judge in the annual labor media contest overseen by the International Labor Communications Association and has served on the steering committee of the Charlottesville Center for Peace and Justice in Virginia.
Swanson will have copies of his book available for signing. Earlier in the day, he will talk on the subject, “Undoing the Imperial Presidency,” at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, in the Bangor Room, Memorial Union, University of Maine.
