BRUNSWICK, Maine — The Coastal Humane Society is gearing up for the ninth annual Paws for a Cause fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 23, as part of L.L.Bean’s Dog Days of August.
The event includes a 5k, beginning 8 a.m. at Memorial Park in Freeport, as well as a one-mile walk and parade, beginning 10 a.m. at Discovery Park in Freeport. All animal lovers are invited to participate and help support CHS.
Last year, the event attracted over 100 walkers and hundreds more spectators and other participants. Nearly 200 dogs congregated in Discovery Park, and over $25,000 was raised to support the animals of CHS. This year, the organization hopes to raise $30,000 for animals in need. The celebrity emcees this year will be Kelsey Fabian and Heather O’Bryan of WCSH 6.
Following the 10 a.m. walk, those that registered for the walk or 5k are eligible to compete in CHS’s popular dog contests for best kisser, best barker, best dressed, best tail-wagger, and pet-owner look alike. The remainder of the day will feature demonstrations by expert dog handlers, instructional workshops, booths, raffles, giveaways, on-site veterinarian Q-and-A, obedience training, rabies vaccination and microchip clinic, and other family and dog-friendly activities.
Prizes will be provided by L.L.Bean. Runners and walkers will receive L.L.Bean gift cards for collecting pledge donations in support of the cause: raise $100 to receive a $10 gift card; raise $250 to receive a $25 gift card; raise $500 to receive a $50 gift card; or raise $1,000 or more to receive a $100 gift card. In addition, each dog contest winner will receive a $25 gift card, and each official walker will receive an event T-shirt.
Registration is at coastalhumanesociety.org. The full schedule of events and the walk and 5k routes available online as well. Dogs in good health are, of course, invited to participate in any of the day’s other activities. Anyone interested in volunteering is invited to help out by calling 725-5051, ext. 14.
