LINCOLNVILLE — The next Belfast Garden Club Open Garden Day will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, July 26, at 54 Bay Road. View naturalistic gardens that integrate the tranquility of surrounding woodlands with stunning views of Penobscot Bay. Rain or shine. A $5 donation will help the Belfast Garden Club fund public gardens and contribute towards a Unity College scholarship.
Cindy Lovecchio’s integrated approach to gardening includes a focus on native plants, incorporating perennials and shrubs that work with the property’s varying topography and microclimates, and that provide habitat or food for birds and pollinators. Creating beauty is also paramount to Cindy’s garden design. Gardens are sited so one can enjoy the features of each before being enticed around the bend to yet another garden, framed vignette, or distant view. Stonewalls, walkways, and arbors and gates add structure to the array of gardens, which include a sunken entry area lined with shrubs and perennials, a “wild” border with rugosa roses and views of the bay, a fanciful border garden with a row of birdhouses, and tranquil shade gardens, among others. The boardwalk that zigzags through ferns and woods to the rocky beach below becomes sculptural as viewed from the upper level. Cindy is a participant in the New York Botanical Garden’s certificate program, and she will be present to answer questions.
