BAR HARBOR, Maine — The potential arrival of the emerald ash borer in Maine threatens ash trees that are central to Wabanaki basket making and ways of life. But students and faculty from the Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions are working with basket makers, tribal communities, state and federal government, the forest products industry, and many others to prepare for this environmental, cultural and economic challenge.

University of Maine Professors David Hart and Darren Ranco will discuss how this innovative partnership is blending indigenous knowledge and Western science to combat such challenges and strengthen community resilience, 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Abbe Museum, 26 Mount Desert St.
