Cash Mobs have been sprouting around the US and Canada, bringing some economic stimulus to community-based businesses during tough economic times. “It’s a simple, fun concept,” says Gordon Orme, the Cash Mob Rockland organizer and founder of ourMidCoast.com, a new website promoting locally-owned, independent businesses, encouraging: SHOP LOCAL – BUY LOCAL. “A group gathers, each person with at least twenty dollars to spend, and ‘mobs’ a local independent business. It’s a good opportunity to meet new friends and support the community economy, definitely a worthwhile endeavor.”
Cash Mob Rockland, is the first in Maine to invite the community to nominate businesses and vote on which one will be “mobbed.”
“As ourMidCoast.com is hosting this event,” said Gordon, “it’s more fair and fun, if the community chooses the first business to be cash-mobbed. We have implemented independent voting with the help of CashMob.com: there you can select from a list of local, independent businesses already nominated, or add a favorite downtown business to the ballot by e-mailing me: Gordon@ourMidCoast.com”
The first Rockland Cash Mob is scheduled to gather on Thursday, August 30th at 4:45pm at a downtown location TBA. The name of the selected business to be ‘mobbed’ will then be revealed, although the business owner will know in advance and prepare for an influx of customers. Everyone will be encouraged to socialize at the “after-mob” get together at a nearby tavern or restaurant.
