BANGOR — Penobscot Theatre Company, Bangor’s professional theater company, invites playwrights to submit their works for inclusion in the theater’s fourth annual Northern Writes New Play Festival. The festival opens at the theater’s historic Bangor Opera House on June 21, 2010, and runs through July 3.
“Penobscot Theatre is committed to the development of new works for the stage, and we invite playwrights to submit their work to our festival. Whether you’re writing your first play or have been writing for 30 years, we give equal weight to all submissions as we choose which pieces to accept into this year’s festival,” said Scott Levy, the theater’s producing artistic director.
Playwrights are invited to submit plays or musicals in development to be considered for a staged reading during the festival. Ten-minute, one-act and full-length works will be considered.
“It’s always wonderful to hear your lines come to life, but it’s even more gratifying to see your characters come to life — to be fleshed out by actors and directors who were all good,” blogged William Fowkes, whose play “The Best Place We’ve Ever Lived” was included in the 2009 competition. “The feedback was valuable and has helped me make some changes.”
More than 60 plays have been developed during the first three years of the festival. Some of the work presented at the festival that has gone on to future life include Mike Daisey’s “The Last Cargo Cult,” which is in production at NYC’s Public Theatre.
Work that is submitted must not be published or have received previous productions.
Submission guidelines include a cover letter discussing how the festival will benefit you and your work, one copy of the manuscript, an application fee of $10, a self-addressed stamped postcard if you want to be notified that we received your submission, a self-addressed stamped envelope with proper postage if you want your manuscript returned.
All submissions must be postmarked by Feb. 14, 2010.
Send submissions to Northern Writes/Penobscot Theatre, 115 Main St. fourth floor, Bangor, 04401.
Playwrights chosen for inclusion in the festival will be notified in early May.
