A hit-and-run accident that stranded a vehicle in the breakdown lane caused a pileup involving eight other vehicles and stopped northbound traffic on Interstate 295 in Falmouth for as much as 45 minutes on Wednesday. Three people suffered minor injuries, state police said.

The stranded vehicle was stalled near mile marker No. 12 on the northbound side of the highway and Trooper John Darcy was assisting the motorist there at about 2:40 p.m. when one vehicle braked suddenly and set off the pileup, state police said.

Three people were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland and five vehicles were towed from the highway. The scene was cleared in about 45 minutes, state police said.
