Bangor detectives arrested Julius Williams, 32, of Hermon, following an investigation of a shooting in Bangor.

A former assistant football coach at Hermon High School was arrested Wednesday night in connection with a shooting last week in Bangor.

Julius Williams, 32, of Hermon was charged with reckless conduct, a Class C crime, and attempted aggravated assault, a Class B crime, according to Bangor police. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail and released on $1,000 cash bail.

Williams was an assistant football coach last fall but decided not to return this fall, Gary Gonyar, superintendent of the Hermon School District said Thursday.

Williams was a star running back for the Husson University Eagles. He rushed for 1,042 yards, averaged 6.6 yards per carry and scored a team-high of 11 touchdowns, according to the Bangor Daily News archives. He graduated in May 2011 and was inducted into Husson’s Sports Hall of Fame five years later.

Bangor police responded to reports of several gunshots between two vehicles at the intersection of York and Essex Streets on Friday. Both vehicles fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival and it was believed the occupants knew each other.

Both vehicles involved have been located and are being processed by evidence technicians, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.

If convicted, Williams faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000 on the Class B charge and up to five years in prison and fine of up to $5,000 on the Class B charge. A conviction on either charge would prohibit Williams from possessing firearms.

Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated Julius Williams’ graduation year.
