Waterville and state police continue to investigate the Friday afternoon shooting of a 7-year-old girl inside a home on Summer Street.

The girl was taken to the MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer Center for Health and then taken by Life Flight helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Police continue to monitor the girl’s condition and remain hopeful, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Police and evidence techs plan to work through Friday night to gather evidence from the second floor apartment on Summer Street where the shooting happened.

Additional information is expected Saturday.

Summer Street and Gold Street in Waterville remain closed.
