Hermon girls outlast OT threat by John Bapst in B North quarterfinals

The date Feb. 15, 2020, will be forever etched in Charlotte Caron’s memory.

Hermon High School’s reserve sophomore forward-guard nailed a 3-pointer with four seconds left to force overtime and then scored the first four points in the extra session as top seed Hermon rallied to eliminate ninth seed John Bapst of Bangor 42-34 in their Class B North scholgirl tournament quarterfinal at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks (18-1) will play No. 4 Old Town, 14-5, in Wednesday’s 3:30 p.m. semifinal at the Cross Insurance Center.

The Crusaders ended the season with a record of 11-9 including three losses to Hermon.

Sadie Campbell had missed a 3-pointer from the left corner but senior guard Paige Plissey chased down the rebound in the right corner and fed Caron just to the right of the key and she drained it.

“I had a lot of energy, a lot of adrenaline,” explained Caron, a 3-point specialist. “I made sure my feet were set. They were right on that line and I let it go. I had a good feeling about it.”

“A senior [Plissey] made a big play to keep it alive and Charlotte came off the bench ready to shoot,” said John Bapst coach Chris Woodside.

Caron gave the Hawks the lead for good when she rebounded a Grace Page miss and put it in.

Hermon outscored John Bapst 8-0 in OT as the Crusaders went 0-for-5 from the floor.

After a pair of missed Crusader free throws, Caron sank two free throws with 1:45 left.

Caron also had three rebounds in the OT and Plissey salted the game away with three free throws.

“This was definitely the most memorable thing I have ever done,” Caron said.

Hermon led by as many as seven points in the fourth quarter but John Bapst used a 15-5 run, sparked by junior Lacey Scanlon’s eight points including two 3-pointers, to take a 34-31 lead with 20.1 seconds remaining.

A missed Crusader free throw kept the Hawks within three.

Page, who missed 2:05 of the fourth quarter but returned after spraining her ankle, paced Hermon with 14 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Caron finished with nine points and five rebounds, Meg Tracy contributed eight points, five rebounds and four steals and Maddie Lebel had five points, nine rebounds and three steals.

Scanlon’s 10 points and six rebounds, junior Jamie McQuarrie’s nine points and three rebounds, Jayda Smith’s five points and seven rebounds and Jamey Satterfield’s five points and four rebounds led John Bapst.
