A 50-year-old woman was killed Tuesday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash in Orland.

Robert Cunningham, 48, of Orland was driving a 2007 Ford Ranger west on Cedar Swamp Road about 4:25 p.m. when he lost control at a left-hand corner and went off the left side of the road before striking an embankment, according to Maine State Police Lt. Roderick Charette.

The Ranger came to a rest on its wheels in the middle of the road, Charette said.

Cunningham’s passenger, 50-year-old Valerie Seavey of Orland, was ejected from the Ranger. Seavey, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene, Charette said.

Cunningham was arrested and taken to the Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth. He was charged with manslaughter, aggravated OUI, aggravated driving to endanger and speeding 30 mph or more over the speed limit, according to Charette.

State troopers are reconstructing the crash, but Charette said speed and alcohol likely contributed to the crash.
