Police handcuff 2 people after standoff in Lewiston

Local and state police are on Walnut Street in Lewiston after reports of shots fired and fighting early Saturday morning.

Lewiston police are investigating a shooting incident that occurred early Saturday morning and resulted in a police standoff.

Police received several calls just before 3 a.m. reporting gunshots and fighting around Walnut and Pierce streets in Lewiston, according to police.

Those involved went into an apartment building at 21 Walnut St. and officers surrounded the building, police said.

Two people were escorted out of the apartment building before being placed in handcuffs, according to News Center Maine.

Lewiston police and Maine State Police are still working at the scene.

A section of Walnut Street is closed to traffic from Bates Street to at least Pierce Street. Police urge the public to stay clear of the area and find alternative routes.
