Police investigate gunman in a Mexico, Maine home.

MEXICO, Maine — A woman and a girl managed to escape from their home in Maine after a man hiding in the basement tried to kill them with a handgun that misfired, according to court documents.

Harry David Every, 49, of Mexico, Maine, faces charges, including attempted murder, aggravated assault, domestic violence and terrorizing with dangerous weapon following the incident last weekend, according to the Sun Journal.

An affidavit by Mexico Police Chief Roy Hodsdon indicates Every broke into the home and stayed in the basement drinking beer before sneaking into the woman’s bedroom early Sunday and holding a gun to her head.

The woman was saved because the gun misfired twice before a third shot hit the wall; she and the girl escaped through a window, the affidavit said.

Every was held Thursday at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset on $250,000 bail after being arraigned on Monday. A message left at his attorney’s office wasn’t immediately returned.
