Massachusetts Maritime jumped out to a four-touchdown lead on Saturday and held on to defeat Maine Maritime Academy 42-21 in their 47th annual Admiral’s Cup football game at Ritchie Field in Castine.

Massachusetts Maritime (2-0) won the rivalry game for the third straight year.

Maine Maritime fell to 0-3 and opens New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference play at home next Saturday against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Mass. Maritime scored two second-quarter touchdowns, the first on a 10-yard pass from Matt Long to Ryan McNally after a holding penalty voided a Maine Maritime pass interception, and the second on a 55-yard run by Long, to build a 14-0 halftime lead.

Long passed 22 yards to Cam Witman to make it 21-0 early in the third quarter, then Mass. Maritime executed an onside kick to get the ball back and extended the lead to four touchdowns on a 1-yard run by Long.

Maine Maritime finally got on the scoreboard on a 48-yard interception return by Biddeford’s Cam Lantagne to cut the gap to 28-7, but a pass interception thrown by Andrew Haining of Palmyra led to Long’s third rushing touchdown of the day, this one from 3 yards out.

Nikolas Moquin then led Maine Maritime on a 17-play, 77-yard march and scored on a 2-yard run to make it 35-14. He later passed 9 yards to Freeport’s Dominic Casale for the game’s final score after Mass. Maritime’s Evan Dyer scored from 4 yards out to give Mass. Maritime a 42-14 lead.

Moquin passed for 130 yards on 14 completions for the Mariners, while freshman Reid Hopkins of Augusta had seven catches for 89 yards.

Long led Mass. Maritime with 138 rushing yards and 107 passing yards.
