LEWISTON, Maine — A teenager charged in a fatal assault in Lewiston park is being held in jail following an altercation at a youth detention center.

Police say the 18-year-old was charged this month with assaulting another teen at the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland.

The Sun Journal reports that a judge on Thursday ordered him to remain in the jail. His lawyer sought to have him released to home confinement.

Prosecutors are seeking to try the defendant as an adult for manslaughter in the death of 38-year-old Donald Giusti, who died after the Lewiston fight in June 2018.

The defendant was 17 at the time of the brawl that contributed to racial tension in the city. Another teenager and a 23-year-old man were charged with misdemeanor assault.
