Chenel Harris-Smith, who was the associate head coach of the women’s basketball team at Division I St. Francis College in Brooklyn, New York, last season, has been named the head women’s basketball coach at Waterville’s Colby College.
Harris-Smith, a native of Mississauga, Ontario, who played for the Trinidad and Tobago national team in 2011, replaces Brittany Gaeton, who guided the Mules for the past three seasons.
St. Francis College went 18-13 this season and lost to Mount St. Mary’s (Maryland) in the opening round of the Northeast Conference Tournament.
Harris-Smith was a former assistant coach at Binghamton and followed Bearcats head coach Linda Cimino to St. Francis.
Cimino and Harris-Smith coached the Bearcats to a school-record 20 wins during the 2017-18 season. Binghamton went 20-12.
Harris-Smith has also been an assistant at the University of Arkansas and Stony Brook.
She was an outstanding player at Kent State University, registering 901 points and 573 rebounds in four years as a forward for the Golden Flashes. She was an All Mid-American Conference honorable mention and All-Rookie team selection.
As a pro player, she averaged 12.6 points and five rebounds per game for Trinidad and Tobago in 2011.
Gaetano has joined the Shooting Touch organization as the Boston Program Director. Shooting Touch provides girls 9-17 years of age with an opportunity to gain mentorship, empowerment, health education and academic support on and off the court.
