A Sagadahoc County sheriff’s deputy was arrested Friday morning on an assault charge.
The Times Record reports that Deputy Matthew Shiers was arrested at 8 a.m. and charged with aggravated assault related to domestic violence.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is leading the criminal investigation, which is being overseen by the Cumberland County district attorney’s office, the newspaper reports. Officials from the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office and Cumberland County district attorney’s office declined to provide details about the charges to the paper.
Shiers was suspended with pay, but that could change if an internal investigation finds he violated department policies and procedures, The Times Record reports. Shiers, who has been with the sheriff’s office since 2006, graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in May 2007, according to the BDN archives.
Shiers was released Friday from the Cumberland County Jail in Portland.
