The driver who struck a telephone pole, knocking down wires and closing Route 302 in Fryeburg for hours Saturday night fell asleep at the wheel, police said.

Fryeburg Police Chief Joshua Potvin said the crash happened around 7:30 p.m.

When police arrived on the scene, a truck was off the road and a pole was snapped, with wires across Route 302, also known as Bridgton Road.

“The operator told investigators that he fell asleep before crossing into the oncoming traffic lane and striking the pole. Fortunately for the operator and other motorists on the road nobody was seriously injured,” Potvin said.

The 54-year-old Fryeburg man who was driving the truck was treated and released on scene.
