Human remains were found Sunday morning in a wooded area behind Walmart on Stillwater Avenue in Bangor, according to police.

The remains were found behind 900 Stillwater Ave., Bangor police Sgt. Wade Betters said. They have been sent to the state medical examiner’s office for identification.

The Maine Warden Service found the remains and alerted local police at 10 a.m. The Bangor Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division responded to the scene after receiving the phone call.

Efforts to locate the body involved about 35 searchers, including state police and warden service tracking dogs. Warden Alan Curtis and his cadaver dog found the remains about half a mile from Stillwater Avenue, according to a release from the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Police have not released any more information.
