Piglets and cows died during a night time barn fire on Bunker Hill Road in Jefferson on Sunday night.

Donna Finch owned the property, while her grandson Morgan Gaglione owned the animals in the barn, Jefferson fire Chief Walter Morris said.

The barn was a total loss. The only part remaining was the metal roof, Morris said.

Five adult pigs were rescued on scene, Morris said.

The fire could have started because of electrical reasons, according to Morris. However, the cause is still unknown. There were more than 10 bales of hay in the barn, creating easy ignition for the fire, Morris said.

Jefferson, Somerville, Newcastle, Windsor and Waldoboro Fire Departments helped in the efforts. Alna Fire Department was dispatched, but turned around before getting to the scene, Morris said. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Central Lincoln County Ambulance were on scene.

The fire started at 11:09 p.m.

Shortly before 1 a.m. Monday all units cleared.
