Early lead propels Gray-New Gloucester girls past Freeport for B South crown

The top-seeded Gray-New Gloucester girls are one step closer to a state championship after defeating No. 3 Freeport 42-31 for the B South regional title Saturday at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.

The Gray-New Gloucester Patriots took control of the game early on, outscoring the Falcons 17-2 in the first quarter.

The Patriots improve to 19-2 on the season. The Freeport Falcons’ season ends at 16-5.

The Patriots will go on to face the winner of today’s Class B North matchup between No. 3 Waterville and No. 1 Mount Desert Island. The Class B girls’ state championship game will take place Saturday, March 2 at 1 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.

This was the first regional championship for the Patriots since 2016. They fell to Houlton 48-35 in the state championship game that year. Gray-New Gloucester has been a playoff basketball regular since 2016, having made it to at least the semifinals every year since.

Gray-New Gloucester defeated No. 5 Wells 48-34 in the semifinals, and bested No. 9 Maranacook 61-27 in the quarterfinals.

Freeport’s season ends at 16-5.

The Falcons outlasted No. 7 Cape Elizabeth in an overtime thriller in the semifinals, coming out on top 49-42. They toppled No. 6 Mountain Valley 49-37 in the quarterfinals.

Freeport made it to the B South finals in 2018, but weren’t able to overcome eventual regional champs Lake Region, falling 42-34.
